Match report On a bright and sunny day at Standlake the Cryptics took on a Oxford Downs XI with great enthusiasm but unfortunately an unbeaten 84 from opener Crouch settled the fixture, comprehensively, for the home side.

Asked to bat first a perky opening stand set the Cryptics on their way in positive fashion, most observers sensed a score of 200 plus. Sayeed Fallah, making his Cryptics debut, swung the willow with aplomb and made it clear that defence was not part of his diet. When the first wicket fell in the seventh over with the score on 44 there appeared to sensible cause for optimism. When Sayeed swung one too many times and was castled by the impressive Watts wickets continue to fall at regular intervals. There were encouraging contributions from Pym Senior and Fox but both were cut down before reaching their prime.

As the players gathered for scones and tea among the fine array of past professionals shoes, there was a general feeling that at least 40 runs had been left out in the middle.

The Downs openers began in reckless fashion: it should really have cost Crouch his wicket in the first over but it was not to be. With the sun speeding up the outfield and Crouch interested in bolstering trade among the local glazers, the scoreboard rattled along at a decent clip. Sami Fallah bowled with superb flight, control and no shortage of turn: on another day, he could have run through a batting line up such as this. Paul Massey it was though who ended the opening stand by nipping out the scalp of Welch for a composed and elegant 44. There was some reward for Sami but in the end it was Crouch who had the last word.
