Cryptics CC - AGM postposed/Dinner cancelled

20 Sep 2025

Dear Cryptic,

It is with great disappointment that I write to inform you that a decision has been made to cancel the 2025 Annual Dinner.

There has been a diminishing number of people attending over the last few years, and this year the decline has continued further.

My thanks to John Hamilton who again spent time organising the evening – finding the suitable date; booking the venue and chef; and, arranging for the Guest Speaker.

I was looking forward to welcoming Nicholas Brookes to the Club Dinner.  Having got stuck into his book (“An Island’s Eleven”) covering the history of Sri Lankan cricket, I was eager to hear more from him.

It has been suggested that a pre-season event might be more popular with members, or even a lunchtime gathering, which negates an overnight stay or late-night travel. Just some thoughts, but I would welcome members’ comments – please do contact me.

With the cancellation of the Dinner comes the postponing of the Annual General Meeting, which was due to take place before the meal. I will be consulting with the Committee to discuss new arrangements, but it is likely to revert to an online format. Full details will be communicated soon.

The Cryptics’ summer did end on a high, with an emphatic win at Oxford Downs by 9 wickets. This victory brought respectability to the end of season tally – 8 wins, 8 losses, and 2 draws.  There were 7 cancelled fixtures, largely down to either one side or the other not being able to raise a team.

To all that played or officiated this season – thank you!  To those that managed/captained a team, or are involved in the administration of this wonderful Club, I am hugely grateful – thank you!

I will aim to be in contact very soon, with details for the rescheduled AGM and circulation of accompanying documents.  In the meantime, my good wishes to you all.

Best regards,

Ed Montague
