Cryptics Cricket Club Won 54 runs

Match report CRYPTICS CC WIN BY 54 RUNS

RHCC won toss and decided to bowl
Cryptics CC 129 for 5 (47 overs)
Royal Household CC 75 all out (26.2 overs)

Although the game itself was uninterrupted, the adverse weather in the run up to the big day certainly had an impact. In a low scoring game, it was the application of the batsmen who put a challenging target on the board.
The damp pitch and humidity meant that the ball skidded, seamed and swung – all at the same time, if you ask the batsman. Having lost the toss, the Cryptics were inserted. Second ball of the game, Rhys Williams was bowled, by another Cryptic – Archer Cornwall, who had been poached by RHCC after last year’s game. James Pym and guest, Tony Norris, dug in and moved the score up to 66. If the conditions were difficult for the batsmen, it was not easy fielding at slip with chances going amiss. After the drinks break, a change of bowling brought the second Cryptics’ wicket, with Pym (27) caught trying to move the score on. They say “one wicket brings two”, and with the addition of one run, Rob Walker called Norris for a quick single, but a direct hit found Norris (26) out of the crease by a couple of metres. With an increase in the scoring rate needed to make a good total, both Harvey Pynn (4) and then Jasper Joyce (3) tried and struggled with tight bowling and a drying wicket, that caused the ball to start popping. Both went without troubling the scorer too much. Enter veteran Mike Stafford. He and Walker dug deep and chipped away forming a valuable 46 run partnership. The innings came to a forced close with the arrival of the fixed tea break.
129 runs looked a very modest total – and that is probably what RHCC thought when they started their innings – an approximate required rate of 3 runs/over. Opening the bowling was Pynn and Michael Norris, and they kept a tight line, making both batsmen work very hard for every run. The ball might not have moved laterally as much as earlier, but it was difficult to time, and there was some variable bounce. Pynn struck first, forcing a mis-timed drive and a looping catch to Pym at slip. M Norris cleaned bowled the new batsman, and moved the ball the other way to take the outside edge of the next, to finish with excellent figures of 2-15 from his 7 overs (age restriction). Meanwhile, the star player for RHCC was finding it tough to get the ball off the square, and in his final innings for the club before he departs for a winter in Brisbane, managed to loft a drive out to Walker, patrolling the short off-side boundary. A good low catch off Pynn (2-24) brought about his departure, to leave RHCC on 38-4 in the 15th over. The introduction of Mike Stafford bowling a tight off-stump line immediately brought the 5th wicket just before the drinks break. The last 20 overs commenced with 83 runs required, with 5 wickets remaining. Paul Massey was brought into the attack, and gave the ball good flight and a tweak, tempting the batsmen. Stafford finished his 3-over spell with a double wicket maiden (3-5), and was replaced by Alex Hutchinson who struck in his first over. Very much on top, it was going to be a case of whether RHCC could block out the remaining overs and force a draw. This was not in their game plan, and the last couple of wickets fell to attempts to play big shots to score boundaries. Joyce picked up his second stumping of the game, and when the final wicket fell Massey completed his spell with respectable figures of 2-14 from 5 overs. A win by 54 runs – not the result that might have been expected at tea! Thanks to Donald MacLeod for umpiring, and also to a Cryptic returning to the pitch after a good 5 year break – William Wilkins – who laid down his study books to don the whites and run out as 12th man. We shall have to wait for 2016 to see him with ball in hand, kicking off the sight screen!
