Cryptics Cricket Club Lost by 111 runs

Match report The Cryptics took on and lost to a strong Amersham side.

We met early and warmed up with our social activities before taking to the field. There was much anticipation as we possessed four genuine seam up pacemen. It was a sort of jazz-hat version of Holding, Garner, Ambrose and Walsh.

Stu Simons and Chris Fox had the first go at the A.C.C. opening pair and immediately got into their work: an intriguing joust ensued. Swing, seam, gusto and guile was punctuated by the odd wristy flick, artful glide and pugnacious aerial punch (the latter being quite inappropriate for a Sunday morning!).

Despite much effort it was not until the introduction of the hirsute Carl Lewis that a the scribe in the score box was called upon to cull a spare part. Then the overseas import was quickly dealt with by Simons, surprisingly caught by Fox in the gully. It was at about this point that Sargant began his work. First from the pavilion end, then with the tall grass at his back, the blond bomb shell bowled with high pace and intimidation. He got his reward at regular intervals, warming stumper Jasper Joyce's assured gloves on two occasions prior to lunch on his way to four wickets in total.

In many ways the Cryptics had much to be confident about but this does not account for young Adam Ali. The day began with him shadow batting in the middle way before the local pastor had finished his sermon. He went on to pilfer 98 stylish runs from the aforementioned Cryptics battery of pace. He favoured crashing the ball through the leg side but was certainly not afraid of piercing the offside ring. It was a real masterclass. The only moment of controversy occurred when the young shaver was yet to reach 50. Simons let go a thunder bolt which struck the batter square on the helmeted forehead but not before the ball had (seemingly) glanced the bat and subsequently found its way into Fox's hungry hands. The sympathetic Cryptics waited until Ali had found his feet before making their appeal. The unsympathetic did not. Either way it seemed to be a done deal but the Umpire (and remember he is the one who counts) did not shake on it.

Nevertheless the Amersham innings ended with a crescendo of wickets and runs to match. The leg spin of Hutchings was delivered with deft control and the mystery off-spinner Montague did a reasonable job.

And so it was that the game moved on to the next phase with the away side suitably ready to undertake a steady run chase in pursuit of 260 something. The first 40 minutes leading up to tea rather undid the optimism as four of the top six were sent packing in the face of the lively opening pair from the Chiltern based set. From one end Tilbury was all height, bounce and tattoos. Whilst Rogers was more gurth, muscle and skid. It was only Joyce (31) for the wanderers who emerged with any credit in the early exchanges. He cut, pulled and hooked but also took his cue from the local bunny population (especially those not affected by mixamatosis) and scurried between the wickets with zest.

After JJ departed, in unexpected fashion, it was not until the effervescent Simons (40) and the effusive Pristnell began their union, that was to pass the 50 mark, that Amersham were exposed to any heat. Both batters mixed precise foot movement and an elegant blade to deal harshly with anything ill directed. The Jazz tent was beginning to fill when Priestnell disturbed their dancing feet with a series of exotic flicks to the deep square boundary.

However that was where the highlights ended. Save some gloriously spanked boundaries from Sargent, the end arrived rather swiftly. The Cryptics were left rueing a lack of application at the top of the batting order.

Many thanks to our generous and skilful hosts.
