Sussex Martlets CC v Cryptics Cricket Club on Tue 04 Aug 2020 at 11:30

Match report
It was a great pleasure for the Cryptics to welcome 7 members of the Nolan family: Jim and his 4 sons and Mike and his son. The Captain and MM had only one job to do - win the toss and bat; he failed and the Club found themselves in the field! The Cryptics bowled and fielded tidily but didn't really break through until Joe Ireland and Will Nolan came on. Will and then Conor Nolan both bowled a good line and length and with 'keeper Jasper Joyce standing up limited the batsmen's options. Joe bowled with his usual skill and consistency. The pressure told and with great work by Jasper 3 batsmen were stumped as they felt the need to force the pace. Just when the Cryptics thought they might keep the total down below 200, Martlets' captain Ben Davies and Jordan Shaw struck the ball well enabling a very fair declaration at 235.
The Cryptics were in the hunt for a while. 14 year old Will Nolan batted beautifully for over two hours his 63, demonstrating not only good technique but also excellent temperament; this should have been the perfect foil for stroke players at the other end. Hamish and Oliver Nolan both got good starts, showing great skill and superb timing with effortless boundaries but neither was able to move to the big score needed to chase down the target. Good Martlets bowling and tight fielding took the target further and further away until in the end it was a fight for survival, which unlike the day before, the Club managed. Jasper Joyce stood firm with support from Paul Armstrong and then Jim Nolan to secure the Draw.
After the match Brian O'Gorman presented the Sandy Ross Trophy to the Martlets who retain it as the holders following the draw. (Sandy Ross played a lot of cricket over many years for both the Cryptics and the Martlets; this trophy was inaugurated in his memory.)
Jim Nolan generously presented two bottles of champagne from his Back Dog Vineyard as Man of Match awards for both teams: the Martlets nominated Jordan Shaw and the Cryptics Will Nolan.
