Match report
Heavy rain on the preceding Saturday saw the Tics’ fixture against the Stragglers of Asia’s pushed back to a 13.00 start at Old Camdenians CC.
Pre-toss discussions were ultimately unnecessary as Alan Nichols called incorrectly and the Cryptics were put out to bat on a relatively damp strip. Despite this, Ed Montague and Junaid Aziz put on forty for the first wicket.
The falling of the opening partnership led to a concerning collapse; Charlie Rawlins was dismissed first ball, Dom Scott skied one when on 10 and Evan Thomas departed without scoring. As such, the Tics fell from 41-0 to 62-4,
Despite wickets falling around him, Junaid Aziz played with fluidity on his way to 92 - his innings is considerably more impressive when contextualised by the fact he had departed the US at Saturday 7.30AM and didn’t fall to slumber throughout any of his journey.
It was he and Alan Nichols that saw the Cryptics prosper, they put on 100 for the seventh wicket - doing so at a rate of knots.
Aptly supported by Chris Ward, following Junaid’s dismissal, Alan Nichols put his foot down further as he smashed the Stragglers’ bowling attack to each and every corner of OCCC. While querying looks were made within the outfield as to when the Tics’ declaration was to come, Nichols continued to place deliveries at a location beyond the boundary rope of his choosing with ease.
With his seventh six and nineteenth boundary, Nichols brought up a 60-ball hundred which saw the Tics declare on 264-6 after 48.5 overs.
Despite momentums’ shifting, the Stragglers, following a superb tea which ranged from fish fingers to samosas, opened their batting account with intent. Tom Elstone and Evan Thomas toiled with the outside edge without initial success. 45 was put on for the Stragglers’ opening stand, before Elstone outwitted his opposite number with a tremendous half volley that was dolleyed to cover.
Following the opening bowlers’ efforts, Marcus Ward and Dom Scott were tasked with breaking with dismissing the second-wicket pairing. Scott, having gotten some treatment, dismissed the Stragglers’ opener thanks to a smart take by Chris Ward behind the stumps. The Stragglers’ number 3 departed soon after also, he pushed one to Charlie Rawlins at extra cover to give Marcus Ward a deserved wicket in the back-end of his spell.
With the third wicket falling, the Stragglers found themselves 136-3 and the bookies would likely have had odds evenly split across all three results.
It was Dom Scott and Alan Nichols who worked in tandem for the concluding 16-or-so overs of the fixture. The Stragglers’ number five soon established himself as the much needed wicket if the Tics were to garner a result of favour for their efforts. He put on 60 at quicker than a run a ball before Scott supposedly turned one beyond his outside edge - Chris Ward again acted sharply to perform a smart stumping.
With five departed, it was evident that there existed a slight tail to the Stragglers’ batting. Scott continued to graft alongside Nichols, who chipped in with a wicket also.
With 6 overs to bowl the scene was as follows:
The Tics required 4 wickets to win;
The Stragglers required 30.
Having garnered two wickets in as many overs towards the back end of his spell, a final over for the ages awaited at OCCC - the Stragglers required 3 to win and the Tics 2 wickets, Dom Scott to bowl.
Two dots followed by a wicket meant the Stragglers’ number 10 (effectively 11, what with them having 10 and the Tics having just 9) entered the affray needing 3 from the last 3 balls but in knowledge of the fact that if he were to be dismissed the Tics would run out victorious.
Unfortunately, he opted to dead-bat the final three delivers of a tremendous Dom Scott spell to ensure that honours were shared and the fixture, despite all its back-and-forth, was drawn. Scott ended with superb figures of 5-for-70 in a crafty 16 over spell.
The remainder of teas were eagerly gulleted following warm handshakes as all reflected on a fantastic fixture.
