Old Hurstjohnians (SouthernTour) v Cryptics Cricket Club on Wed 07 Aug 2024 at 1130
Cryptics Cricket Club Won Cryptics won by 1 wicket
Match report
First toss of the tour lost and Cryptics were put into the field, fortunately that's what the skipper wanted. As with every year Hurst are strong and they showed that with a great opening partnership. Although one of their openers who went on to get 63 was dropped on 3 or 4 occasions, Dom eventually trapped him lbw. However, rumours circled that he gave away his wicket as he frantically grabbed his phone from the umpire to take a work call. Joe got the other opener bowled straight through the gate. Hurst no.3 batted very nicely and raced to his 50 eventually succumbing to Stephen on 86. 5 & 6 could certainly bat and massively frustrated the Cryptics. As the overs ticked into the 40's they were due to declare at over 50, but Hurst pushed on in order for no.5 to get his 100 which he did in the 54th. Much deserved, a great innings taking their total to 299. Special mentions to Joe's 1 for 62 off 12, Stephens 1 for 57 of 12 and Dom's 2 for 40 off 7.
300 to win, could it be done some asked... Well we certainly weren't going for the draw and this was the messaged passed round to all. Sam & Carl opening up, almost seeing off their opening bowlers before Carl was bowled. "It's too fast" were the cry's as he came back to the changing room. Stewart was next in with a couple of lovely cover drives before chipping one up to long on. Next in was Adam and fortunately we had two friends out in the middle who on the Sunday / Monday before had represented Devon together. This gave the captain hope that he could leave it in their capable hands, and capable hands it was. Sam & Adam had every shot in the book, Sam getting to his 50 comfortably. However, next ball he fell to a quicker delivery from their stalwart off spinner trapping him in front of the stumps. Dom was next in and supported Adam to get to his 50. Adam at this point looking extremely comfortable playing sweep shots galore. It was certainly looking like Adams day as he raced to 78, it needed something special to end his innings and it certainly was. Another beautiful sweep saw the ball destined for the boundary but out of nowhere running round from deep midwicket their opening bat dived and took a fantastic catch to see Adam heading back to the changing room. Stephen was next in who supported Dom to get to his 50, lots of boundaries coming from his piece of wood before a silly shot saw him bowled for 70. At this point the scoreboard was looking strong at 250 odd but not as many wickets in hand as we would have liked. Eoin took Dom's place but sadly didn't last long and was bowled for 1. In stepped Joe at no.8 to steady the ship. He rotated the strike nicely giving Stephen the chance to play some big shots. 28 needed off 7 overs and Stephen hit 2 big 6's to drastically bring that down. He went for the 3rd 6 and was bowled for 39. Now into the tail it was time for Hurst to bring back their sharp opener who had Tom caught behind for 5. Ted went in and played some great defensive shots to keep the opener out but shortly after bowled Joe middle stump. Needing just 2 to win at this point a very nervous Alan stepped up to face the last delivery of the 45th over. Quick, but a forward defensive kept their main threat out for now. 2 over remained with 2 runs to win. Up stepped Hurst captain to take the penultimate over. A few nervy dots followed before a huge appeal for caught behind which was swiftly denied. A full toss followed which Ted dispatched for 4 taking Cryptics to a huge win against Hurst chasing down that 299 on the board with 1 wicket and 1.2 overs remaining. 3 wins from 3 on the southern tour this year, great effort from all!
