Match report A disappointing defeat at Pangbourne College.

Our total of 104 on a tricky pitch was a bit too skinny, and only then held together by Tarun Eapen, who's calm and composed 60 - the top score by quite some distance, gave us something to bowl at. Rob Walker was obdurate in an opening partnership that proved difficult to break, but it was equally difficult to score runs on a sticky pitch with a lush outfield. Really, there was not too much of note to follow, as we got ourselves out in a variety of ways whilst trying to provide Tarun with the support he needed.

The Cryptics started the defence of this total quite magnificently, and the sterling, economical efforts of Arun, asked to open the bowling at late notice, and Will who battled gamely through a multitude of injuries to deliver a typically parsimonious opening spell must be noted. Unfortunately, the skipper's introduction loosened this vice-like grip on the run-rate, and the Cryptics were always behind the game from there on in. Paul Massey, Tiny Goldsworthy, Tarun and Prakrith Rao contributed some game bowling efforts - a challenging ask when their openers were well-set, but that breakthrough was difficult to find, until a triple-wicket maiden arrived from seemingly nowhere. Props to Andrew McCulla for strong work behind the stumps and hearty appealing.

An enjoyable day, a less enjoyable result and good hospitality from the Stragglers with a good Curry lunch. Here's hoping for better fortunes next year.
