Old Amplefordians CC v Cryptics Cricket Club on Mon 03 Aug 2020 at 12 NOON
Cryptics Cricket Club Lost by 71 runs

Match report Following a tidy 48 overs in the field, the Cryptics didn't do themselves justice in a 'stop-start' chase that never gathered the momentum required to reach the 246 set by Old Amplefordians.

In spite of promising early season contributions from Hamish Nolan (43), Oliver Nolan (24) and Joe Ireland (27), and following a middle order collapse reminiscent of England in the mid-1990s, Paul Armstrong (21) and Nino Trapani were left with 5+ overs to survive to secure a 'losing' draw. After several overs of comfortable resistance, with just one ball left in the day, and a comically offensive field in place, Armstrong gently rolled a soft half-tracker into the bread basket of a surprised short-leg. Defeat was seized from the jaws of stalemate. And Armstrong was left ruing his decision not to simply club the ball through the fieldsman, which he would surely have done were he not such a compassionate gent possessive of the maturity and perspective to know that some things (e.g. player welfare) are more important than the result of 'Jazz-hat' cricket matches. Armstrong's own player welfare was subsequently catered for by a liquid (and deserved) Idiot of the Day reward, courtesy of Black-Dog Hill Vineyard - many thanks to Jim Nolan, as ever.

Before lunch, Olly and Rufus Nolan were unlucky to claim only 1 wicket between them in their extensive opening spells. Both brothers used the abundant hand sanitiser to good effect, extracting lateral movement from the new ball and beating the bat countless times. One can only feel that later in the season, the edge of the bat would have been found more frequently. The lion's share of wickets was left to the spinning double act of Willis (17 - 2 - 61 - 5) and Ireland (14 - 1 -57 - 3), who showed characteristic guile and control in breaching early season defences and provoking injudicious stroke play from a restless middle order. The Cryptics held their catches and left the field at lunch-time confident of attaining what looked to be a par score. Alas, our confidence was not matched by our temperament or batsmanship and, following last ball theatricals that had to be seen to be believed, OAs claimed a 71 run victory.

Thanks to our hosts (Worth School) and very able opposition for such an enjoyable day.
