What a return to Club colours for Tom Jones! In his first match for the Club in a few years, and watched by his wife of six months, Tom destroyed the Pink Elephants' attack with a brilliant 120 not out in 28 overs.

On a glorious day in Vincent Square beautifully prepared for us by Franklin, the Westminster groundsman notwithstanding the rain which caused most matches to be cancelled on Saturday, The match was scheduled for 84 overs with side batting first allowed a maximum of 44. The Cryptics Match Manager got the only thing he was told he had to get right, wrong! He lost the toss and the Club had to field first. James Harrod, who sadly reruns to Oz at the end of term, bowled well at a lively pace regularly beating the bat and giving very little away, finishing with 2-131 off 13 overs. Mitesh Bhimjyami bowled 7 overs of seamers (rather than his usual leggies) picking up 2-17. With subsequent bowlers, Chris Eades, Nick Hodgson and Tim Forte each collecting one, wickets fell regularly and at 117-7 the odds looked to be on a pretty modest total. But Simon James (with nudges, nurdles and deflections) and Lucas McConnell (with some beautiful drives) added 51 more runs to take the score to 168 at the end of the Pink Elephants' 44 overs. This was a total their captain Joe Ireland was later heard to say he genuinely thought they could defend. But he had not reckoned on his opening bowler Lucas McConnell sustaining an injury in his first over and Tom Jones deciding he wanted to get back to Kent on the early train!

Cryptics debutant Liam Oakes batted well enough demonstrating superb timing through the midwicket and mid on areas especially. However when the 100 was reached he had only got 11 and 33 when he was out with the score on 120! Not that he batted badly but Tom was superb. He combined considerable brute strength, simply smashing the balls to various parts of the field with some exquisitely timed sweeps and cuts. Twice he advanced to hit Joe Ireland straight once for six which bounced onto the roof of the Pavilion and the other for 4, not an indignantly which Joe suffers with his normally miserly and skillful slow left arm. But perhaps the pick of his shots were the two which took took to his hundred, wonderful cover drives out of the middle of the bat giving the fielder no chance at all.

After last year's defeat the Club was keen to seek redress this year and did so with some style. Many thanks to Joe Ireland for facilitating the match at the lovely Vincent Square ground.
