Sandhurst Wanderers v Cryptics Cricket Club on Sun 15 May 2016 at 12.30pm
Cryptics Cricket Club Won by 8 runs
Match report
Cryptics strangle amazing win in low-scoring match.
After having less than a full team in 2015 the Club was determined to make a good showing this year and the Match Manager was pleased to have a strong batting line up plus two quality left arm spinners, an offie and top class seam attack. He had no hesitation in batting first and looked forward to gifted batters entertaining the crowd of cadets who were assembled to watch their instructor. It was therefore a shock to lose a wicket in the first over and then another and then...Soon it was 4 for 4 and 9 for 5. There is no doubt the Sandhurst seamers were bowling well...but not that well! Fortunately former Club President Andrew Lewis brought his experience to bear; he arrived at 4-4 and the score was 53 when he was out. Tom Andrews played some glorious shots but was frustrated when terrific blows landed in the outfield and failed to reach the boundary. He scored 36, more than half the Cryptics total of 67 in 26.3 overs. So much for a good batting team.
Will Wilkins bowled 9 overs down wind with accuracy, movement and a nippy pace. Francois Vainker bowled excellent slow left arm from the other end. After 10 over Sandhurst were 10 for 4. An it could have been worse with RMAS Skipper Satchell being dropped by Fergus Pack twice in consecutive overs! Vainker gave way to Massey whose super slow offies accounted for Satchell for 15 and two others in quick succession. However with less than 20 needed and RMAS with 4 wickets in hand and J Hamblin looking to play sensibly and get them home, Cryptics chances looked slim. Paul Massey and Joe Ireland bowled well making scoring difficult and inducing chances but still the runs came. But with hours to go and few runs needed came two runouts! Steve Dolben's excellent throw from the cover boundary to 'keeper Nick Priestnall enabled him to whip off the bails then Hamblin, who was batting well decided to take on Francois Vainker's arm to be stunned when his throw hit the one stump he had to aim at from 50 yards. Massey and Ireland with one more each finished it off for the Club to win by 8 runs. Umpire and Club President, Mark Williams, with all his extensive experience marked it as one the more surprising matches of his career. After 20 wickets for 126 runs in less than 50 overs, both sides, somewhat stunned, got stuck into an excellent cream tea.
