With the score at 31-2 the seemingly strong Cryptics batting line-up assembled for this fixture looked to be in trouble. However a stand of 171 at 6 an over by Hamish Nolan (105) and James Wilson (64) redressed the balance. They both played some beautifully timed stylish shots and were brutal on some weak Martlet bowling. A typically rapid and powerful 34 by Mike Nolan enabled Jasper Joyce to declare on 256-6 after 44 overs with a likely 50 overs to be bowled in response. However rain caused the loss of some 40 minutes and bowling was not easy with a wet ball. Rufus Nolan and James Wilson bowled well and Rufus got two in two balls in his second over. Rufus gave way to Tom Whyte and James to Conor Nolan. Tom was soon in among the wickets and Conor yorked Ben Davis, the Martlets captain, who was intent on taking the fight to the Cryptics. Tom Whyte picked up wickets regularly on the way to his 5-36. However it looked as if the Martlets last pair would see them to a draw until the first ball of the last over when a wild slash at a ball from Conor Nolan led to a nonchalant superb one-handed grab at 3rd slip by his brother Hamish to seal the win.
The good bowling and catching were supported by outstanding 'keeping by Cryptics captain Jasper Joyce.
Tom Whyte received the Man of the Match award, a bottle of the superb Black Dog Hill sparkling wine generously donated by Jim Nolan. We all enjoyed an informal post-match tasting too thanks to Jim.
