Where to begin? A text message arrived saying ‘I’m at Ardingly’ from Babs, who was in a different postcode from your scribe, who therefore missed the first hour. But I’m told that there were a couple of debatable decisions in the pre-drinks session, which left Cryptics 32-3. Babs himself felt a nick on his lbw, but a golden duck added further to his misery. Thankfully Jason Doole continued his good form (53) and Vivek Naryan batted classily for 27. Skipper Matt Samson never lost faith in his team and Joe Ireland ignored the requests for a reprise of his notorious team talk, held on this ground in 2010.
A key partnership of 33 between James Hamilton and Will Buckland took Cryptics to 153 on a pitch increasingly receptive to spin.
Chris Fox bowled a tight line and was unlucky to have both openers dropped at mid-wicket. Perhaps still disorientated by which Sussex public school he was playing at, Babs dropped a catch at mid-off. The sound it made off his sternum at least suggested he was in excellent physical shape. As our old nemesis Mark Semmence got into his stride, and OHJs passed 100 for the loss of just 2 wickets, Cryptics refused to accept the inevitable. Naryan then bowled Semmence and Mike Stafford’s arm ball accounted for OHJ opener Tom Fairfax (56), which turned the game. Whereas the home side had been cruising, and the sherry-swigging local supporters purring with delight, the OHJ middle order were suddenly paralysed. Samson switched Naryan to the far end and his second spell was irresistible. An edge was palmed by Joe Ireland at slip to gully Tom Chappell, who took a reflex catch inches from the turf. Ireland wheeled away at the other end, for 3-22 to support Naryan, whose 6-36 was a man of the match performance in a famous victory for the Cryptics.
