Hampshire Hogs CC v Cryptics Cricket Club on Wed 13 Aug 2025 at 11am
Cryptics Cricket Club Lost by 4 wickets
Match report
Despite a few last minute changes to the team, The Cryptics had a reasonable side to take down to Warnford to take on the Hogs, including a number of new faces. The sun was out, the outfield remarkably still green, but the wicket dry so it was a slight surprise when the Hogs captain Rory Tennant called correctly and decided to bowl first, especially when the Cryptics openers Jason Doole and Dom Woodford got us off to a very solid start, making an excellent opening century stand. Scoring was not rapid, the wicket on the slow side but Doole and Woodford batted excellently, but finally the Hogs broke our opening stand for 136 with Doole (76) and Woodford (56) going in quick succession. However, it was clear that local knowledge was important as the Hogs turned to their wide selection of spinners who removed both openers and the game took on a very different feel. Hugo Holmes and George Zawoda between them bowled very well together, in total 27 overs between them, completely drying up the run rate and taking wickets at regular intervals. From 136-0 the Cryptics fell away with no other batters really getting anywhere, although Flynn Day looked a good batter but also fell to the spinners for 16 as he tried to impose himself. Mike Stafford ended up 19 not out, but the fact that it took even the Great Staff 49 balls to get to that point tells you how difficult scoring was. Either side of 2 unexpected rain showers the Cryptics hand was forced into declaration at 205-8 off 56 overs, with the two main Hogs spinners Holmes and Zawoda taking 7-77 between them with Zawoda a well deserved 5-for.
As with the Cryptics innings, the Hogs went well against the seam of Humzah Khan and Andy Day, although in particular Day (drafted in from the Wiltshire over 50s) bowled a very nice away swing line and was very unlucky not to get at least a couple of wickets, although Khan did manage to break the opening partnership just before they reached 50. Again as with the first innings some control and wickets started to come through the spin of Seb Woodford, Lily Day and Paul Massey. Lily in particular bowled beautifully with lovely loop. Despite better control and the odd slice of luck, the Hogs continued to play the spin well, with the opener Louis Hansom playing a match winning knock of 71, and at 168-3 the Hogs were well in control. However, a twist with 3 wickets for 2 runs and lots of dot balls really put pressure on the Hogs, and all of a sudden 6 wickets down the residual 37 runs looked a way off. However the Hogs did not go into their shell and played positive cricket, hitting over the top straight a number of times to put the game to bed with overs to spare.
So the Hogs were ultimately a bit too strong and deserved the win, but a good game in the end with plenty of fighting spirit from the Cryptics. Particular mention to Lily Day who bowled her longest ever spell of 16 overs either side of tea, and probably deserved more than her 3 wickets, some excellent and slick keeping from her brother Flynn, and a super 50 for the very talented 14 year old Dom Woodford, who even got the 'Senior Pro' Mike Stafford purring about his technique! This game was also a reminder of why Cricket is such an incredible game, and absolutely unique - what other game can players ranging from 14 to 70 plus years old, with both men and women play in the same match, all contribute on an equal footing?
