Amersham CC v Cryptics Cricket Club on Sun 22 Jun 2025 at 1pm
Cryptics Cricket Club Lost by 71 runs
Match report
Weather - Sun, Cloudy, muggy, blowy, and a late rain shower
Toss - Won by Amersham who elected to bat
The Cryptics took to the field with 10 players, which on a large, fast outfield presented lots of gaps to score. And Amersham started off quickly and contnued to scored at a high rate throughout their innings.
Humzah Khan, visiting American cricketer making debut, bowled nicely, but a slight niggle brought about his withdrawal from the attack. His opening partner in the pace attack, William Wilkins, plugged away to no reward. Lots of "Ooooos" and "Aaahhhs" to keep the crowd entertained. His spell came to end when he went down to form a long barrier to a ball speeding towards him on the fine leg boundary, but forgot to use his hands and the ball whacked into the part of his knee devoid of any existing protection/padding/strappling. Unable to bowl further, he thereafter only managed to hobble around the outfield for remainder of innings.
Ben Westhead bowled well, and took the first wicket - the ball was skied, and with all nearby fielders running in the opposite direction, Ben was best placed to pocket the catch, which he did with ease. He was unfortunate not to get more wickets. He beat the outside ed ge of bat and eluded the off stump on numerous occasions - even the umpire winced.
Paul Massey gave the ball good flight and a good tweak. Batsmen went after him and found the gaps in (and over) the field. He managed to halt the progress of two batters as they looked to launch the ball to all parts of the ground.
Richard Pye, the second debutant, partnered Paul well, and settled into a rythm. Batters found the boundary all too often, but he did mange to bag a couple of wickets.
At 40 overs, Amersham declared for 6 wickets, setting Cryptics a challenging 256 to win.
The first 3 wickets fell rather cheaply, and at 20-3 off 8 overs, the target looked a long way away!
Prakrith Rao and Humzah Khan set about rebuilding the innings. Tight bowling and some good fielding stemmed the flow of runs, and the run rate kept going up... and up! Both bats seemed to be enjoying their net session in the middle, and were so focussed on protecting their wicket that sometimes forgot that they were on a run chase! The 4th wicket fell in the 30th over with the score on 108. Looking at near on 15 runs per over required the Cryptics looked to have a dart. Westhead and Pye had a go, but did not last long. Montague joined Khan, now a half centurion, in the middle, keen to add some further respectability to the score. Sadly the partnership was short-lived, as Khan went on the charge and was stumped. Wilkins came to the crease and was instantly maunsade to run a couple... to get the knee moving. He played some classic defensive shots, showing the full face of the bat and makers name to the camera. At the other end, not known for his ability to block out for a draw, the captain played one shot too many, and edged to the keeper. This brought Massey to join Wilkins for the final overs. With the field up, the batters were able to take runs and rotate the strike. A brief cloudburst, brought a delay that bizaarely caused the loss of 2 overs, which meant that the remaining pair had to hold out for 2 overs to bring about the draw. The Amersham captain (Choksi) took responsibility, and third ball bowled a beautiful yorker, which Massey could not stop from hitting middle stump. This brought about the bowlers 5 wicket haul.
A deserved win for Amersham. Good to see a return of James Young to the team since 2020, and welcome to two new players to the Club - Richard Pye and Humzah Khan, who we hope to see again soon.
