Sussex Martlets (Southern Tour) v Cryptics Cricket Club on Tue 06 Aug 2024 at 1130
Cryptics Cricket Club Won Cryptics won by 2 wickets

Match report The weather man got this all wrong... Promised glorious sun all day and ended up with drizzle from 11:00 all the way through until 14:30. An early lunch was taken, the covers eventually came off but due to the delay a decision was taken to switch from a timed game to a limited 35 over match. The toss, won again by Cryptics, held firm and the Marlets were put into bat. Jack opened up with some serious pace which certainly shocked one of the openers as he fell in the first over nicked behind. Tom opening up at the other end, looking sharp and in his second over took 2 quick wickets. The Cryptics were certainly on top but batsmen 4 & 5 dug in and started hitting some runs. With the spin twins Dom & Stephen on it wasn't long until the next wickets fell. With a main bowler injured we turned to part timer Sam who certainly gave us some interesting deliveries, however, would have picked up a wicket if it wasn't for a drop in the deep. Wickets 8 & 9 came from James before bringing back Jack to finish it off leaving Martlets all out for 136 in 32 overs. All of our core bowlers picking up 2 wickets each with special mentions all round; Dom 2 for 24 off 7, Stephen 2 for 28 off 7, Jack 2 for 25 off 6, Tom 2 for 21 off 5 and James 2 for 20 off 4.

Surely there was only one way this match was going with a mere 3.8 per over required for the win, but that's not how cricket works... A strong opening partnership from Adam and Carl saw us ticking along nicely with a 31 & 20 respectively. But then the wickets started to fall. Sam nudged one back to the bowler for 1, Finlay taking one straight to the box on his first delivery left him a little shaken before falling for 11. Stephen raced to 29 off 29 deliveries with a huge 6 in there, whilst our double centurion from the day before fell for a golden duck. James went in and steadied the ship alongside Jack but a big swish saw Jack bowled. Our no.10 Tom was walking out to the crease with 5 required for the win. Fortunately we didn't have to see Alan at no.11 as Tom guided one down to 3rd man boundary for the win in the 30th over. A great bowling attack from Martlets certainly had our heart rates up, but 2nd win on tour was in the bag.
