Cryptics Cricket Club Lost
Match report
Cryptics 181-9 (A.Blanchard 5-80)
St Edwards Martyrs 182-3 (R.Davies 110*)
Martyrs won by 7 wickets
The challenge for the Martyrs of raising a side on the day of the European Cup Final left us with a negotiated 10 a side game (the Cryptics MM once again turning out for the opposition and Ed Montague crossing the floor to assist) and a target of an early finish. The Cryptics were "encouraged" to bat first and Junaid Aziz and Henry Sensecall put on nearly 50 together against the the Martyrs opening attack. They fell in successive overs as Archie Blanchard entered the attack for the Martyrs. Rob Walker and Nick Ashton saw the club past 100 as Stuart Walter and Matt Nicholls fell too early in their promising innings. The latter stages of the Cryptics stay at the crease were brightened up by Mike Stafford's breezy 37 in which he scampered back and forth like a man a quarter of his age and almost outrunning Nick Ashton. Archie Blanchard closed with a five wicket haul and Ruairi Willis tidied up the loose ends to send the Cryptics in with a modest 181 runs. Knowing the strength and depth of the Martyrs batting from previous encounters this was never going to be enough unless the bowlers could break through quickly. Ed Montague fell to a sharp slip catch by Junaid Aziz off the bowling of Nick Ashton - a rare highlight. Matt Nicholls bowled a sharp and tidy spell from the other end and reduced the Martyrs to 41-2 when he bowled A.Turner. But this was as much as we had to enjoy as Davies and Keown amassed an impressive and chanceless century partnership in quick time seeing off an array of bowling options. Just shy of the target, Keown holed out off Eoin Simpkins and was caught a long way away by Matt Nicholls at long on - a six on many other grounds. In barely twenty seven overs the Martyrs were home by seven wickets and the possibility of missing even the preamble to the final was a distant threat.
