Match report The build-up was not without drama; getting the requisite 11 players, the opposition changed from Authentic to 3rd XI, the rain had fallen casting a shadow of doubt and finally a late change to the venue . But these challenges were as nothing to a redoubtable Cryptics outfit that recorded a tight won , last over , victory. The venue change was not insignificant as it was to Pembroke Collages sports fields which only has access via a 10 min walk, over a railway bridge.
On our final arrival , it was agreed to play a 45over match with usual restrictions. The team assembled and as the batting order was negotiated it became apparent that we only had 10! A miscommunication meant that Mike Stafford was to heroically join us later on. On closer inspection the wicket was , sporting! The outfield too was also reminiscence of the rough at the USA PGA, and meant that only a handful of boundaries would be scored all day. But Cryptics had 10 players who all would like to bat four – so much to OUCC surprise we won the toss and batted. Punchy. It was hard going but H parman and M balanced defence with attack well . However , wickets fell regularly and Ollie Wills was particularly hard done by to be given LBW first ball. We struggled up towards 90 and were 8 wickets down, the jeopardy increased by fact that Mike S had not arrived yet! He did just in the nick of time and was in middle 3 mins after his first hello. Cryptics posted 129 all out in 44 overs. Allowing for outfield that was probably 150/160 in old money. Was it enough? View was that it wasn’t as bad as it looked on the page and that if we could nick a few early and put pressure on …. it was winnable. O’Donnell and Conor Nolan opened with very tidy , brisk , opening spells and OUCC realised that this was not going to be easy. It was just the start we needed. And so to the guts of the innings – pace off , spin and let’s see if OUCC could attack on such a wicket , with no run of the ball in the outfield. M Parman (leg spin) and Gorringe (seam up darts) poured on the pressure – and shut down the scoring , periodically taking wickets. They went so well it was agreed to bowl them both out – straight 9 overs on the bounce and try and squeeze! Harry L was excellent behind the stumps in very challenging circumstances.
The game had perhaps swung a little our way, but with such a low scoring affair it only takes 1 “big” over by the batters and it can slip away …. . H Parmar came on with his offspring and C Nolan and O’Donnell picked up the remaining overs with good control.
Fielding was tight and pressure was building , again!
it came down to last over .
OUCC needed 7 to win, with 3 wickets in hand. But, frontline bowlers were bowled out. Skipper reluctantly took the ball. A single, simple run out by bowler, 2, excellent run out by c nolan front deep cover (think Roy world cup final – and Langham very similar glove work to buttler too – outstanding game winning moment), dot, 1, wicket / stumped .
And so a very tight win off last over defending 129 in 45 overs (eloquently detailing the conditions!)
The venue was perhaps less than perfect but a great day was had by all.
