MCC v Cryptics Cricket Club on Mon 10 Jul 2023 at 1130

Match report
At the start of the last over all results were possible: the Club needed to 10 to win with 1 wicket standing and the captain, John Carroll, at the crease. MCC played it mean, adopting a "we-don't-want-to-lose" field with men on the boundaries everywhere. This gave John nowhere to go for the runs and he decided that there was no point in perishing and saw the Club home to an excellent draw.
The great finish had been all set up by a well-timed declaration by MCC. They reached 253-5 in 48 overs thanks to an immense 173* by Scott De Weymarn who benefitted from being dropped from two very hard chances in the first over while on nought! Who know what might have happened if either of these had been held. Conor Nolan generated good pace and movement early on and Debayan Dasgupta bowled tightly; both beat the bat and induced errors and constrained the scoring for the first hour. Gradually the batsmen got some momentum and, although a couple of wickets fell, as De Weymarn got into his stride, the scoring rate increased. This continued after lunch enabling the very positive result-orientated declaration.
The Cryptics began the chase well with a steady partnership between Tarun Eapen and Sam Elstone before two wickets fell bringing Hamish Nolan to the crease. It took time for him to feel comfortable before he started to match Sam's fluency. During their excellent partnership the Cryptics really began to believe that the win was achievable. They rotated the strike and hit the bad balls for boundaries. Then two more quick wickets brought Ben Armstrong to the wicket, currently unable to bowl his due to injury but relishing his new role in a team as middle order "usually good for 30-40". He and Hamish built a good partnership - again rotating the strike and hitting the bad balls. Again, the Cryptics believed...
Once Ben was out, Conor and Rufus Nolan followed...but there was still hope. Cryptics Captain John Carroll showed lots of class and nouse. He defended good balls soundly and hit anything loose to the boundary (as shown by the 5 x 4s and 1 x 6 in his 38*) and in doing so brought the target again seemingly within reach. With Debayan Dasgupta showing great resolve at the other end, perhaps he could bring it home. However the field spread to all corners offering John lots of singles but that wouldn't be enough so an exciting draw was secured with honours even.
Very many thanks to umpires Mark Williams and Keir Hopley, scorers, Jon Curtis and Paul Stubbs and for the fantastic work of Paul Armstrong in organising the wonderful ground and the catering. All in all an excellent day of wandering declaration cricket.
