Match report
St Edward's Martyrs 267-8 (48 overs) (B.Jacobs 76)
Cryptics 144-7 (38 overs) (C. Rintoul 51)
It was a very warm day punctuated with refreshment and sanitisation breaks, but fortified with an excellent lunch and tea, somehow the teams drew the strength to send down 86 overs over its course. The negotiations for the toss resulted in St Edwards choosing to bat first - they would experience the hottest part of the day in the field as it turned out but not before the Cryptics had toiled for 48 overs in the sun. However, throughout this time the side, flaunting five over 50s fielded energetically with lengthy pursuits to distant boundaries, An early wicket came as Cryptic Ed Montague, wrestling with the identity crisis of being a Cryptic alone in the middle amidst a hostile opposition, chopped on to his stumps, the only reward until Alex Gunn bowled Blanchard with the score on 65. The prospect of running even 22 yards in the heat saw Jacobs, elegant stroke play to leg and off, and Hyman, elegant leg side strokeplay, double the score in the next eight overs. Ben Westhead bowled Jacobs on the stroke of lunch and we withdrew to the shade at 135-3. In the first over after lunch Hyman's proclivity for striking to the leg gifted a simple catch to Craig Rintoul at deep square leg. Not long after Cryptic Jasper Joyce feathered another Westhead delivery behind to Nick Priestnall and the Cryptics could be forgiven for a sense of satisfaction at "reducing" the Martyrs to 149-5 further enhanced by a flick behind square off Mike Stafford that came to rest in Algie Corbin's hands soon afterwards. However, the scourge of the Hampshire Hogs last year, some time Cryptic Will Bull, rapidly pulled things back for the Martyrs with a flamboyant 45 that consisted of a range of trick shots., He withdrew to allow the tail to have a bat and an explosive four overs saw the score race to 267-7 with a declaration at 3.40pm. Somehow the Maths had gone a bit awry and the Cryptics could hope at best to face an hour and fifty minutes to generate a pursuit of this total. With the score at 75-0 at tea off 14 overs, some might have fancied the odds when the target was adjusted to 221 off a further 24 overs. Alas Mukesh Halai returned shortly after tea after a steady 28. Despite the enticing buffet bowling interspersed with some effective spin and seam work, the Cryptics never developed sufficient momentum. Needing over 130 going into the last hour with three batters out it looked remote and when debutant Craig Rintoul was brilliantly caught at short extra cover by Assembo soon after - he had been dropped twice in an elegant innings which had included 8 boundaries across a wide and sluggish outfield - the drive went to. Robin White shone briefly with a solid 22 but it soon came time to save the game. 121-6 was precarious when Andrew Ward and Mike Stafford found themselves together. They added 22 runs in 14 overs. The Martyrs encircled and assailed their prey with nine bowlers and great enthusiasm but a solid defence secured the draw in the last over.
It was great to be back at St Edward's School after a break of a few years - this fixture was inaugurated shortly after the second World War and it was good to re-establish the link with what has been an important feeder school for the Cryptics over that time. The presence of three in the Martyrs side confirmed that healthy association.
