Cryptics Cricket Club Lost By 1 wicket

Match report TWO GREAT MATCHES ON ONE DAY - Australia and Cryptics both lose by one wicket!

While England were pulling off an astonishing victory at Headingly the Cryptics were close to winning at Hampstead...but actually lost! Cricket was the winner etc etc. This match was first played in 1912 and is the fixture which the Cryptics Cricket Club has played more times than any other. The fixture has always epitomised the spirit of cricket and certainly did so today. Mark Williams officiated at a ground where he scored several hundreds for the Club. Thanks to him and to the super-efficient Hampstead scorer Dierdre Skinner and to Hampstead CC for their excellent hospitality. (We especially appreciated the equanimity which their Australian groundsman showed notwithstanding the events at Headingly. Maybe he had had a quiet flutter on England which eased the pain of defeat?)

Cryptics skipper Nick Priestnall was down to 7 at one point but fielded a good balanced XI in the end. Apart from achieving that he did the other most important job and won the toss so the Cryptics batted first on another scorcher. The other benefit of not fielding in the heat of the day was that they could watch the Test match too! Tom Chappell batted beautifully as ever: assured in defense and ruthless with any bad ball (although he told the skipper later he had only played 4 games this year). Mukesh Halai supported him well, keeping the nagging bowlers at bay but without quite being able to punish anything lose. They put on 85 for the first wicket, theoretically creating an ideal platform for later players to be more expansive. But to be fair to Hampstead they bowled very tightly, giving little away with skipper Fergal Walter bowling not only tightly but also well enough to pick up 4 wickets. The heat and longer drinks breaks made timing the declaration difficult. But at 196 after 46 overs the Cryptics were called in (just a few minutes after Ben Stokes had secured a momentous victory for England).

The Cryptics were quickly under the cosh with Anshul Gupta taking a fancy to everything that was bowled and Dev Nair riding his luck (dropped by the 'keeper in the 20s and just avoiding fielders on several other occasions) before growing in confidence, At 115 Gupta took the decision that the win was secured and retired to give some others a chance. The Umpire clearly instructed the scorer that he was Retired Out but the scoreboard continued not to reflect this. With exception of Chris Barrow, the rest of the Hampstead team managed 30 runs as Adnan Mohammed and young Devin Khetani took 7 wickets and there were 2 run outs, one a brilliant pick and direct hit by Tom Chappell from square leg. Tom also took a great catch in the deep and Freddie Iswariah hung on to a crucial skier. When on 193 Devin bowled skipper Walter it could have been all over and the Cryptics could have secured a 3 run victory. BUT the after a team consultation the Cryptics agreed to allow the Hampstead opener who had retired to come back. There was no obligation to do this as he had Retired Out but it was felt i the spirit of Cryptics' cricket it should be allowed. Gupta duly finished it off and secured a Hampstead win.
