Match report The Cryptics were invited to bat on what looked to be a slow wicket following overnight rain and the bright and breezy onslaught that was delivered by Ayyaz Mallick and Junaid Aziz might have called such a decision into doubt. They put on 189 for the first wicket before Ayyaz was well caught at long on by Ed Owens. Then suddenly the fireworks were extinguished. Junaid graciously retired having made a second century in this fixture and the remaining combatants scratched about forty runs to set a target of 243 to win in a similar timescale. Perhaps the excellent tea that followed hampered the Cryptics response in return. The homemade cakes, including a delicious millionaire's shortbread made the trip worthwhile. The Downs set off in a characteristically brisk manner. Harvey Pynn would eventually claim both openers with Mark Hunt pinned LBW and Will Watts a victim of an erratic bounce which left the ball ballooning to Charlie Pynn behind the stumps. Anton Madzarevic put in a tremendous 12 over spell which applied some restraint to the runfest which followed. He bowled Dan Davison and Rhys Coates with his beguiling off breaks before Ben Ling and Will Owens started to take the game away. Ben Ling's seven sixes, including one that was caught by Ayyaz who then stepped back over the rope might have been the difference between the two sides. He was also brilliantly caught by Chris Humphreys off what was determined as a high no ball off Mike Stafford. He would finally succumb caught by Junaid off Marcus Ward but there was too much time left and Will Owens and Matt Watts safely negotiated the final twenty runs at a slightly more sedate rate.
As always though, it was a good game of cricket on a glorious afternoon with hospitable hosts.
