Match report Another visit to St Edwards and again a gritty battle to earn a draw though thanks to no small extent to the generosity of our hosts who clearly enjoyed this brand of cricket. The Martyrs batted first and set off briskly as always with West and Jacobs keen to score runs at an alarming rate, eased in part by the presence of only ten Cryptics. With the 100 run mark looming, West feathered a Steve Linton delivery to Prakrith Rao behind the stumps and left one short of his fifty. A change in personnel started to tame the rampant scoring as Mike Stafford and Stuart Walter hauled back the flood of runs. Jonny Spencer slapped a Stafford delivery straight to Marcus Ward at midwicket. Ben Jacobs swung across the line and was LBW to Stafford. Shortly afterwards Tom Leeson mistimed the wily Stafford and was caught by the bowler followed in similar manner by Eliot Hyman. With the score at 169-5. the Cryptics seemed to have achieved a remarkable turn around going into lunch might feel this was a better day. But lunch would reverse those fortunes and the Martyrs quickly enhanced their tally in the hour or so after lunch and with no further loss of wickets, declared at 262-5. Henry Sensecall and Marcus Ward opened up for the Cryptics and Henry seemed to pick up his form of previous visits with three quick boundaries before he was caught behind off Hyman for 12. Junaid Aziz settled into the innings but in trying to pull away from a delivery from Withers-Green, found the ball following him and feathered it through for an outstanding one handed grab by the athletic Spencer behind the stumps. Deepak Malhotra was not around long and the Cryptics were soon 43-3 in only the seventh over. Prakrith Rao suffered a similar fate to Junaid and was unable to trouble the scorer on this, his first visit to the middle. Stuart Walter was around long enough to see the first 50 passed before he was bowled by Campbell. Steve Linton joined Marcus Ward and the flow of wickets was replaced with a modest flow of runs though the latter, who had scored exclusively behind square on both sides, tried to take on Gowen and was bowled for 26 and the Cryptics were 89-6. The hero with the ball previously, Mike Stafford, went out to bat with his friend Steve and hopes were raised once again of recovery and survival. But having added barely thirty runs together Steve was LBW to Lappin and not long after Chris Ward shared a similar fate. Morgan Atkins went out as our tenth batter and became Lappin's third victim. The game could have been over but Tom Leeson invited the Cryptics to send someone back to bat as number eleven. Prakrith was given the honour and this time fare much better as he and Mike did not just hold out but added 60 runs together whilst the Martyrs enjoyed trying to break them with ingenuity of variety rather than raw pace. This was a marvellous gesture by the Martyrs for the whom the game was there for the taking but they ensured that the enjoyment of the game played in the best of spirits was put first.
