Durham Pilgrims 240-2 dec (T.Basu 100*, G.Fishwick 89) and 191 all out (G.Fishwick 68*)
The two day game against the Durham Pilgrims was played at the beautiful Seaham Harbour Cricket Club, barely a quarter of a mile from the North Sea and with the last throes of Storm Floris gusting briskly across the ground on the Tuesday. The cricket club were most hospitable with bacon buns to fortify us on arrival (and soak up the excess alcohol on day two) and formidable lunches and teas on both days. Managing a two day game can be challenging but the final statistics show that the Cryptics scored 435 runs in 80.5 overs and the Pilgrims amassed 431 in 79.4 overs with 19 balls to spare at the end. Pretty well judged second declaration!
The Cryptics batted first and Alex Kennedy (21) and Matt Oddie (22) fell just shy of a fifty partnership when both fell in the space of just three runs. Caleb Greenhalgh and Ben Westhead added nearly a hundred together when they came in for lunch after 30 overs with the score now a safer 143-2. Lunch may have favoured the Pilgrims more than the visitors as Ben Westhead was bowled straight after lunch for 41 and his brother James came and went soon afterwards. James Rowe provided another eccentric interlude with the bat but it was Josh Bristol who pulled the innings back together with Caleb and saw us past 200. Caleb was bowled for a fine 81 before Ockie Erasmus added some quick runs to see us to 229 before Josh's departure saw the innings closed.
The bright start with the bat by the Cryptics was emulated by the Durham Pilgrims with Collins and Oxford Blue Basu setting off briskly in pursuit of our score. Collins miscued a short delivery from Sam Davies and Ockie Erasmus back- pedalled safely to take the catch at square leg with the hosts on 48. This was to be our only reward before the close of play as Fishwick and Basu quietly accumulated runs to reach 187 at the close of play, more or less matching our own scoring rate. What followed on tour is best left on tour and the CCTV systems of Newcastle city centre....
Suffice to say, all safely returned to the ground for Wednesday. The Pilgrims understandably felt they deserved a few more runs and Chris Ward and Ockie Erasmus provided the cannon fodder to ensure they soon declared just eleven runs ahead with Ockie having the satisfaction of getting Fishwick caught by James Rowe at mid on for 89. Basu ended 100 not out.
So with relative parity in the scores we set off again but some of the polish of the previous day had worn off. Alex Kennedy struck one boundary before being caught behind. Matt Oddie and Caleb Greenhalgh restored respectability and the prospect of a good total. But Caleb was bowled for 19 when we had reached 80 and a mini collapse saw us limp into lunch at 97-4. Things did not improve and a succession of wickets after lunch saw the Cryptics decline to 117-7 with Matt Oddie out for 68 to an excellent low catch at slip by Pilgrims skipper Applegarth. Ockie Erasmus was then supported by Nick Westhead raising the score to 150 and then by Chris Ward who nurdled away while Ockie did the heavy lifting to bring up 200 and his own excellent half century. They were called in at 206-8 and the Pilgrims were set 195 to win in about forty overs.
The Pilgrims adjusted their batting order so we did not see Basu or Fishwick until late in the innings. Chris Ward was the bowling beneficiary of some underpowered driving to mid on and mid off where James Rowe and Sam Davies took catches that saw the Pilgrims decline to 51-3. Ockie was putting in a shift and in his tenth over, now bowling spin, he struck three times in three balls. Barlow flicked the ball off his legs to Ben Westhead at mid wicket. Collins was clean bowled and then Dowell attempting to reverse sweep his first ball, gloved the ball to Ward at slip. At 77-6 there may have been some optimism compounded by Matt Oddie bowling Jevon with the score on 85 but now Fishwick re-joined the fray and was quickly into his stride. When Sanderson was caught by Sam Davies at mid off the Pilgrims were 117-8, a similar slump to the Cryptics. However, they now had the centurion from the first innings, Basu, to help them out and in about six overs, they had bludgeoned their way to 165. Sam Davies, one of the main casualties of the night out, was brought back on, partnering Ockie in an attempt to get the last two wickets and or, slow the run rate - 7 overs left, 31 runs needed. Basu edged to Ockie at slip and captain Applegarth came to the crease, stubbornly blocking out an over of Ockie. The next over saw Fishwick launch Ockie for 6 twice over square leg. The thirty sixth over began with Fishwick on strike - 185-9. The first ball Fishwick hit another four. The second looked likely to cross the rope at deep cover but Alex Kennedy, having not had the greatest of days in the field up to now, scooped it off the turf just short and sent it in leaving Fishwick stranded at the non striker's end. Three balls later a yorker length delivery from Davies struck Applegarth on the pad in front and umpire Erasmus delivered his judgement. The Cryptics had held out by just four runs. Of course things could have turned out differently had we had eleven fielders on the second day, James Westhead having had to leave that morning. On the vast Seaham Harbour outfield, defending the boundaries with just ten was always going to be a challenge but clearly something went right.
