Yorkshire Gents 69 all out
Overcast and damp conditions but a covered pitch at Escrick Park greeted the Cryptics as they prepared to face the Yorkshire Gents. This is a beautiful location for cricket with the sadly now closed Escrick Park school set on the hill above the ground. Courtesy of a couple of late arrivals, the visitors got to bat first on what proved to be a slightly unpredictable pitch where all out aggression paid off occasionally though before lunch it took some effort to get the ball over the ropes on the damp outfield. After the early loss of Liam Parkinson to a delivery that kept low, Andy Ramsden and Connor Nel sped the score up to 43 in just over 7 overs before the former was caught for 15. In the space of a few overs we were reduced to 60-5, our late arrivals having thankfully pitched up. Ben Riley and James Westhead steadied the decline with more circumspect batting that brought us close to 100 before James picked out the only fielder on the leg side with a perfectly placed pull shot. Dan Rawson joined Ben who was enjoying the prospect of getting a lunch break "just like at Lord's". They edged us back towards respectability before Ben made a complete mess of a slow ball from Wintle and was bowled for 37 shortly before said break - which meant he could enjoy it all the more. A fine lunch awaited us when we came off with the score at 134-7. After lunch we accumulated what we thought were valuable runs to take us to what seemed a more defendable 189 thanks largely to Dan Rawson's 42. For the Gents, Richardson was the stand out bowler with five wickets
By now we had warm sunshine and the outfield was dry and a bit quicker. The Yorkshire Gents made a watchful start against the onslaught of Ben Westhead and William Wilkins. The calm was broken when a somewhat optimistic call for a single behind square leg was met with a tracer bullet from Dan Rawson to the Keeper's end that left the opener some way short. A couple of overs later, an innocuous short delivery outside the off stump from Wilkins was slapped straight to Connor Nel at cover for the second wicket. Runs were hard to come by and even the watchful Barker was only able to play a full toss straight back into the hands of Andy Ramsden in his first over. Connor Nel was brought on and in a devastating six over spell took 3-2. A legside stumping by James Westhead off Ramsden left the Gents at 41-5. Enter James Rowe, playing his first game since school and now more of a softball specialist. Range and line proved quite challenging for James and the batsmen but the highlight was the delivery (not the shot) that was fielded at cover point by Ben Westhead. He was replaced by Liam Parkinson who was better able to find the stumps and picked up the last two Gents wickets quite quickly leaving them a long way short of our score.
Having travelled up from Oxfordshire to play this game for the first time, it was great to meet the Northern Cryptics, gathered by Nick Westhead, and enjoy the hospitality of the Yorkshire Gents. I would commend the game and the venue to others who may not have had the pleasure of this fixture.
