Match report St Edwards Martyrs 251-5 (Ades 103)
Cryptics 190-9
Success at St Edwards continues to elude us as once again our bowlers were battered about the ground on a glorious day in Oxford and then a promising start to chase this down faltered and survived to draw. There were moments to celebrate. An early wicket during a fine spell of quick bowling from Matt Nichols which saw Hoddinot chop the ball on to his stumps, a keeper's catch by Henry Sensecall in Paul Massey's first over, an outrageous one handed backwards diving catch by Adrian Zagoritis at slip off Sasha Barras followed many runs later by a more regulation catch in the same combination at a distant long on. There was a happily relaxed attitude to the 12th man laws which enabled the Cryptics to keep a reasonably able 11 on the field at all times, including bowling and batting. And there was good ground fielding around the park which probably kept the score below 300 - special mention for Eoin Simpkins whose excellent ground fielding contribution was brought to an end by a block at mid off that not only saved a four but left him limping off with a bruised foot. Henry's keeping was excellent as always with some particularly pleasing leg side takes off Sasha. Alas we dropped Ades on his way to his century though the subsequent visitors to the crease all seemed to be cut from the same cloth with their brutal hitting.
A positive reply saw Adrian Zagoritis and Robbie Hardwick take us swiftly to 40 in just seven overs but both were out caught soon after. Tom Wigglesworth and Henry Sensecall kept up a cracking run rate and took us to 112-2 as the last hour started and a victory looked eminently achievable. Tom hit seven 4s in his 29. Henry meanwhile cleared the ropes three times with substantial sixes and a host of "enormous 4s" on his way to 75. However, their departure saw the start of a gradual slide and whilst a cheerful 22 from Matt Nichols kept us hoping a rear guard action might yet take us home, it was not to be. The Cryptics were nine down with seven overs to play and Eoin Simpkins with somewhat erratic help from Chris Ward shepherded the last overs to a stalemate shouldering arms calmly to the last two balls.
Great spirit from the Martyrs as always. Their batting and tendency to take nearly all their catches was probably the difference.
