Oxford Downs CC v Cryptics Cricket Club Cryptics on Sun 08 Sep 2019 at 13:30
Cryptics Cricket Club Won Cryptics 173 all out, Oxford Downs 167 all out. Cryptics won by 6 runs

Match report I think it is a fair measure of the reputation of the club that the Oxford Downs invited us back to play after our first endeavour in June was washed out at the half way point. This is a fixture with a fine history stretching back many years and it is hoped it will remain on the card for many years to come. This year they hosted a tremendous game of cricket whose outcome was in the balance to the last ball if the margin of 6 runs is a fair assessment. In fact they were 6 down and about a dozen runs short when a cascade of wickets abruptly changed the fortunes of both sides. The Cryptics were invited to bat and laboured a little to their total of 173 all out. Jason Doole top scored with 52 and was one of seven to be caught out by some at times outstanding fielding from the Downsmen. Rob Walker had scored a century on his last visit and was shaping up nicely before being the first of Will Watts' victims to be suckered by the slower ball. Dipesh Bhudia injected some much needed runs towards the end of the innings to ensure we went into tea with a defendable total.
The opening partnership of Dipesh Bhudia and Harvey Pynn proved an excellent combination. Between them they took 8 wickets though only six in their opening spells by which time the Downs were 71-6. Having anticipated that spin might take on this track, we were somewhat startled by the explosive innings of Matt Watts, allegedly his first of the season, in which he cleared the ropes and the Abingdon Road on his way to 105. His son Gavin held the fort with 9 before skying to Adrian Zagoritis at slip and setting in train the dramatic conclusion. Matt Watts followed shortly afterwards, done by an excellent slower ball from Dipesh. In the next over Chris Ward diverted a drive onto the stumps leaving Ed Wildman stranded and a few balls later, after an alarming dropped catch at mid off, Dipesh finished off by bowling Will Watts off his pads.
As well as the outstanding bowling performances of Harvey and Dipesh, credit is also due to Ed Montague who kindly agreed to skipper on the day, sparing the match manager the decision making of those final fraught overs.
