Match report After a beautiful morning, showers from the west interrupted and finally forced us to abandon the game at Standlake against the Oxford Downs. The Cryptics batted first and after losing Jason Doole in the second over, Ben Westhead and Rob Walker built a partnership of 99 in 17 overs. Fine stroke play scattered the Downs fielders with few if any chances being offered. A break for showers brought tea forward and on resuming Ben was caught in the first over after tea for 36. Nick Westhead was then caught in the slips before scoring. Marcus Ward joined Rob and together they added 76 runs up to the next shower which allowed the latter to complete an excellent century surviving a scare just short of 100 when a miscued hook dislodged his cap perilously close to his stumps. The innings was closed on 176-3 and despite the Cryptics' determination to bowl 30 overs back at the Downs, only one was managed before the rain returned and the game brought to a close with players repairing to the fine clubhouse to watch Bangladesh beat South Africa. This fixture remains a cornerstone of the season's offering, not least for the hospitality of the Downs and the excellent teas which few of us perhaps deserved but all enjoyed!
