Cryptics Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets

Match report Cambridge Crusaders v Cryptics, Sun 24 April 2016

With a Nordic gale blowing across Girton College’s outfield, Cryptics searched for extra jumpers, blankets and extra shirts (£10 a pop from Ed Montague’s car boot). But nothing could restrain our enthusiasm for too long. Asked to field first, James Wilson gamely offered to bowl into the wind, supporting Tom Marshall’s opening burst.

Wilson bowled an extraordinary high loopy bouncer which deceived batsman and umpire in the flight. No wide was signalled. After Marshall had found some movement to account for the Crusaders captain Tom Day, Wilson took a sharp catch in his follow through. The Crusaders kept offering chances and Cryptics’ catching was excellent. The champagne moment was Warren Miller’s leg-side stumping, standing up to young Lucas McConnell. His combination of jaffas, wides and outswingers was highly impressive for an U15 bowler, but it was a juicy full-toss which put him on a hat-trick. Everyone but the batsman had heard the shout of ‘Stay there, Tom!’ to Marshall on the boundary, the moment before the ball disappeared down his throat. Lucas may have missed his hat-trick – just - due to a thick outside edge, but was more than happy with his figures of 5-26 off 6 overs.

An eighth-wicket partnership of 67 by the Crusaders made Cryptics work and Lyall Hill’s innings of 56 was very good. But Marshall's slippery second spell put pay to their recovery, clean bowling Hill and Blanchard to finish with 4-35. A lovely lasagne warmed the cricketers up before the second innings.

The students were soon chasing leather as Olly Clayson sent some scorching blows through square leg and over cover. In an opening partnership of 95, Mike Stafford scored just 4, but provided the perfect supporting role. In playing perhaps the only forward defensive of his innings, Clayson felt his bat collapse into two pieces as he dropped the ball at his feet. But is there anything in cricket that could surprise Mike Stafford? 'Storm damage' was his verdict as he mourned the fate of the original tree. Clayson accelerated regardless and his reverse sweeps frustrated the bowlers intensely. He was, unknown to him, on 98 when for once his footwork let him down against the spinners. Apparently his studs became stuck, preventing him from making his ground. Well batted!

The damage was done. Straight strikes from Wilson propelled the innings as Gary McConnell calmly worked the ball around at the other end to score 24. The scores were level and all was left was to provide the coup de grace. McConnell was disgusted at having given a return catch. Enter the Marshalls, father and son, to celebrate a 5-wicket victory. But with a wide. If that was an anti-climax, we hastened to the College bar, only to find it closed all day Sunday. Clearly there are studious types in these parts. The George in Girton offered well-deserved refreshment instead, and the Cryptics’ season was off and running.
