On a blistering hot day two of the oldest wandering sides finally met. The venue was the lovely Bradfield CC where the host was Paul Armstrong! *
The Incogs won the toss and elected to bat. Tom Elstone bowled superbly in a long spell. He induced several edges including two in his first over but nothing stuck. Both openers prospered and passed 50. Joe Ireland's experience and guile put on the brakes and the wickets began to fall. Incogs still made 255-8 declared from 41 overs. A fair declaration but still a big challenge for the Cryptics after their fielding spell through the hottest part of the day.
Sam Elstone looked assured from the start - leaving or defending good deliveries and despatching anything loose to the boundary. He got good support from Prakash and Nick Ashton and captain Joe Ireland stuck some good blows. However Sam's departure for 120 and two unfortunate and avoidable runouts gave the Incogs hope and sent jitters through Cryptics, especially Messrs Wilkins and Massey who were padded and ready. In fact it was Tom Elstone who struck 3 consecutive boundaries in the 19th over of the 20 to level the scores which eased the tension. The Cryptics won with an over to spare.
*Cryptic Paul Armstrong had responded to a late call up by Bradfield CC the day before with 141*
