Saturday 9th April saw the Club make Oxford the focal point of its activities, playing its opening game against long-standing rival St Edward's School, and in the evening holding its AGM and Annual Dinner where, appropriately Stephen Jones, Warden of St Edward's, was the guest.
The match details will soon be elsewhere on the site but suffice it to say that the Club lost quite heavily. They were pleased to have bowled the school out for 164 with Chris Ward taking 4 wickets, clearly benefiting from his excellent warm-up spells in Menorca. Unfortunately the School bowling and especially the fielding was superb and the Club only reached 92 all out. Top scorer was St Edward's School coach Richard Howitt with 50* to add to his 3 wickets.
The Club AGM and Dinner was once again held at the Oxford University OTC which provided a superb meal and drinks. Nick Priestnall was asked to tell the Club about the Menorca tour in the absence of Tour Manager Alex Hutchinson. Nick said the tour had been a great success and thoroughly enjoyable with one win and one defeat at the lovely Menorca Cricket Club whose members had been excellent hosts. Guest Speaker Stephen Jones did not dwell too much on his School's victory in his speech! He made much of quotations from CRL james and from "England their England" and extolled the virtues of the game of cricket. In reply Club President, Mark Williams, talked of his work at MCC and his responsibilities for the Laws of Cricket. He talked specifically of potential sanctions for unacceptable on-field behaviour which are being tested in some leagues this year. A very enjoyable dinner ended with guests approaching the amazingly good value bar in the Mess at the OUOTC before wending their various ways home.
