Royal Household CC v Cryptics Cricket Club on Sun 01 May 2016 at 2pm
Cryptics Cricket Club Won 90 runs
Match report
An excellent all-round team effort brought about victory at Royal Household.
The key batsmen scored runs, and the bowlers all contributed.
Having lost the toss, the Cryptics were inserted on a firm, but damp wicket. Simon Halliday and Mike Price opened the innings with an excellent display of batting, against a ball stopping at one end and skidding and staying low at the other. Boundaries were hard to come by, hampered by sprawling fielders and a lush outfield. Halliday was out first for 34, with the total on 60. Enter Warren Miller, a candidate for the Club. He and Price continued to build on the good start. They added a further 67 before Price was causght for 44. At the start, 150 runs was thought to be a good score. 200 was now looking to be a target. Unfortunately, the innings rather capitulated from here on until the tea interval. Only Miller held the innings together, until he was out stumped for 58, in an effort to move the innings on. Denis Winter was the choice of the Royal Household bowling with well flighted slow bowling earning him figure of 4-40 from 11 overs.
After a hearty tea, the Club took to the field. At the start of the game, the team would happily have settled for 181. The pitch had however dried quite nicely, and with an approximate required run rate of 4.5 per over, it was going to be interesting. Tom Andrews took the first over, and saw his second ball creamed to the boundary, be it slightly upishly, between the cover fieldsmen. They were to be Ensom's only runs. James Wilson started at the other end, and with his second ball struck. The ball hit the batsman's front pad whilst bat was still coming down. The only debate was how high it would have hit the middle stump. The dejected opener/captain/wicket keeper returned to the pavilion for 0. The batsmen play cautiously, the wicket still a little tricky, against tight bowling from Andrews and Wilson. Andrews struck next with the prize scalp of Ensom. A quicker ball followed by a slower ball, the batsman was through the shot and the ball took off stump. Wickets continued to fall at regular intervals, and with few runs being added to the score. Wilson picked up a second, and William Wilkins, making his first full return to the Club in 5 years, struck a blow with his second ball, Gird caught and bowled. Chris Fox found his rhythm, and proceeded to take a wicket in each of his next 4 overs. Only Glen in the top order stuck around for a gritty 12 before becoming one of Fox's victims. At 37-8, and the 20 overs just started, the game was only going one way. A further double bowling change gave Paul Massey and Chris Ward the opportunity to close the innings. It was not going to be quite so simple. Schleter at number 9 (clearly not normally finding himself so low down in the order) took a liking to the bowling, and crashed the ball around the ground. Chances to take his wicket were missed, as he was dropped 3 times, as he raced to 49 off 38 balls. With Massey having taken the ninth wicket, Schleter appeared to be going for a big straight 6 to bring up his 50, however was beaten in the flight and ball struck off stump. 91 all out.
A Cryptics win by 90 runs.
Pick of the bowlers for the Club was Chris Fox 4-10 from 5 overs.
The game ended at just the right time, with the light fading and a chill westerly wind picking up.
Thanks to the Royal Household for excellent hospitality (and providing the sole scorer), to the umpires (Mark Williams and Deborah Burns), and to our players for a pretty sound performance.
The tally, on UK soil, is: Played 3, Won 2, Lost 1.
